 OVERVIEW

The decoy slick is basically a table-top version of a working decoy. It is flat on the bottom and does not have a
weight or rudder attached for floating and uprighting purposes. It's called a "slick" because it has a smooth
surface without any feather delineation or texturing. The painting gives the piece a textured look. The body is a
solid block of basswood, and the head is carved separately and then attached. The student is expected to produce
a smooth, symmetrical body and head to close but not unrealistic tolerances. Techniques for the proper use of
gesso as a sealer and primer are taught, as well as techniques to paint the "Sunday Slick", or slick dressed in its
"Sunday best". This is a good project for the novice and recently graduated novice looking for more of a
challenge, and one that will lay a good foundation for more decorative carving.
